An AI tool can produce a homepage quickly. A business website still needs a clear offer, a domain you control, hosting, a working way to receive enquiries and a plan for updates. This guide follows a small local business from brief to launch and upkeep.
Start with a brief the business can approve
Imagine a bicycle repair shop serving two neighbourhoods. Its goal is not simply to look modern; it needs nearby riders to understand which repairs it handles and book a service. Before asking AI to design anything, write down the facts and decisions the site must express:
- Customer and area. Local cyclists in two neighbourhoods, with walk-in and booked repairs.
- Main action. Call during opening hours or send a repair request. Decide which one should be easiest.
- Pages and proof. Services, prices, hours, location, real photos, warranty terms and common questions.
- Practical limits. Languages, who will update opening hours, which contact details may be public and what must not be invented.
Give the AI approved facts and ask it to mark gaps instead of inventing claims. Request a page outline, copy and mobile layout first, then review those before generating the site. The business owner must check prices, services, photos, accessibility and tone.
Build a mobile-friendly website for a bicycle repair shop in two neighbourhoods. Use only these approved facts: [services, prices, hours, address, phone, booking method]. Draft Home, Repairs, Prices and Contact. Mark missing facts for review. Do not invent claims, prices, hours or testimonials. Use accessible headings and labels. List what the owner must approve.
Choose a hosted builder or editable source code
A hosted website builder combines editing, templates and hosting. It suits an owner who wants a visual editor and accepts dependence on the provider’s features, plan and export options. Check renewal prices, page limits, forms and what happens if you leave.
A code-based route gives you files you can review and change, usually in a code repository. You still need hosting and someone who can safely update the code. Before work starts, make sure the business owns or has access to the domain, hosting account, repository, analytics and any paid tools. AI subscriptions are separate from hosting.
As of 21 October 2026, my studio preference for a small-business site with editable source is Claude Code with Opus 5.5. Anthropic confirms Opus 5.5 is available in Claude Code (announcement). This is a dated workflow choice, not a universal design recommendation. Choose a hosted builder if you prefer visual editing and less technical upkeep.
Register the domain in the business’s name
A domain such as example.com is the address people type. Search short, easy-to-spell options, then register the chosen name in the business owner’s account with an email the business controls. Turn on renewal reminders or automatic renewal, keep payment details current and check the renewal price; a first-year offer is not the whole cost.
For a dated reference, Porkbun listed .com domains from US$11.08 per year when checked on 21 October 2026. Availability, premium names, taxes and renewal prices vary; confirm the exact term and later renewal cost in the registrar’s checkout before buying (current domain search and pricing).
Your domain’s DNS is a set of directions: it tells browsers where the website lives and where services such as email should go. Hosting serves the site’s files or runs its server. Connecting a domain means adding the records your hosting provider specifies. If the business already uses email, preserve its MX records and related email settings; changing nameservers or DNS records without checking can interrupt mail.
Pick hosting that fits what the site does
A simple brochure site can often use static hosting, which serves ready-made HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images. It does not need a server that generates every page on request. A booking system, login, database or personalised content may need a backend or a separate service. A contact form also needs a real endpoint that receives and routes submissions; adding a form shape to a static page does not make it send anything.
As one current example, Netlify lists a Free plan at US$0 with a 300-credit monthly limit and a Personal plan at US$9 per month with 1,000 credits. Those are plan details checked on 21 October 2026, not a promise that every project fits the free allowance; review the current pricing and usage limits. A coding assistant or model subscription is a separate cost.
Build and publish the right files
For a plain static site, the publishable folder contains the finished pages, styles, scripts and images. A framework often creates a separate output folder, commonly named dist or build, after its build step. Publish that output, rather than blindly uploading a project’s whole working directory. Keep passwords, API keys, private customer data and local configuration files out of public files and source repositories.
Deployment means publishing a version of your website to hosting so browsers can request its files. A preview lets you review a version before replacing the site on your main domain. A preview URL may still be publicly accessible; use the host’s access controls for confidential content.
- Preview. Create a preview deployment and open it on a phone and a computer.
- Inspect. Check pages, menus, images, business details, language links and keyboard navigation.
- Test the enquiry path. Send the form. Confirm the message arrives, the visitor sees a useful confirmation and errors can be recovered.
- Publish. After the owner approves the preview, deploy it to production and connect the domain with the host’s instructions. Netlify documents Git deployment and manual file upload in its deployment guide.
Enable HTTPS, then choose one canonical address, such as www.example.com or example.com, and redirect the other version to it. Recheck the site after DNS changes: the root domain, www address, secure connection, contact form and email should all behave as intended. Keep an uptime alert so someone hears about a failure; monitoring cannot promise 100% uptime.
Help Google discover the website
Search engine optimization (SEO) helps search engines understand useful pages and helps people decide whether to visit. Use accurate titles, clear headings, useful service descriptions, descriptive links and correct business details. This guide uses SEM for paid search ads, though the term can be broader. Read Google’s SEO Starter Guide.
Add the domain as a property in Google Search Console and verify it with the DNS record Google provides. Submit a sitemap if the site has one, then use URL Inspection to check an important page and request a crawl. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks; a request does not guarantee indexing or a particular search position (Google’s recrawl guidance). A newly published website may take time to appear, even when configured correctly.
For local visibility, use real business details consistently and create pages that answer customer questions rather than repeat keywords. Add languages only when someone can review each version. The AI SEO/SEM service scopes custom workflows and data integrations that prepare recommendations and drafts from the business’s approved data.
Measure real enquiries, not just clicks
Create a Google Analytics 4 property and web data stream, add its tag to the site, and confirm that the Realtime report receives a visit. Google’s setup guide covers those steps. Where privacy rules require consent, configure the consent flow before loading non-essential analytics or advertising tags.
If you want to measure leads, define an event for a successful form submission and test it from start to finish. A click on a phone number, opening an email draft, viewing a form or a bot’s request is not automatically a completed enquiry. Compare analytics with the inbox or booking system, remove spam and agree what counts as a qualified lead before reporting results.
Plan the ongoing cost before launch
Recurring costs may include the domain renewal, hosting, form delivery, email, an AI subscription, analytics or consent tools, and the time needed to correct information, update software and publish reviewed content. The cheapest first month can become the expensive choice if the business cannot edit the site or move its files later.
Illustrative budget checked 21 October 2026, not a quote: a .com at Porkbun’s listed starting price of US$11.08 per year averages US$0.92 per month (11.08 ÷ 12, rounded), and Netlify Personal at US$9 per month gives US$9.92 per month before tax. This assumes that plan is actually needed and fits within its credit limit. It excludes forms, email, any separate AI subscription and other tools; verify each provider’s current terms and renewal prices.
Prefer us to build and manage your website?
Clutch’s website setup starts from US$600; managed care starts from US$300 per month. Setup is a one-time project; care is monthly. The agreed scope can include availability monitoring, SEO upkeep, tracking and reports, and agreed translation and blog work. Small paid-search tests or campaign management require approval; advertising spend is separate. The quote lists external domain, hosting and tool fees, applicable taxes and scope. Your setup includes a simple website and a simple management interface, with content-editing and reporting controls agreed before the build. See website development, maintenance and growth.
To discuss a website, share the business, existing domain, languages and pages you need. Those details are enough to start defining the scope and whether ongoing care makes sense.
